X Plane 10

A ton of new stuff came out yesterday! Everything shipped! Here’s a summary…

X-Plane 10.40 Is Final

X-Plane 10.40 is now the official release of X-Plane, for all users. This includes Steam users!  X-Plane 10.40 features hundreds of new 3-d airports, extended visibility with faster DSF loading, and just a ton of new features. Here’s a short summary of what’s new if you haven’t been in the beta. Here’s a really long summary.

Two gotchas:

  • Windows 10 users – if you let X-Plane auto-update and it fails with “Permission Denied”, you can work around this by running the X-Plane Installer directly (with X-Plane not running) and update X-Plane directly.  Once you have 10.40, the next auto-update should work.
  • We have a handful of bug fixes that didn’t make 10.40 final – they’ll be in a 10.41 patch later this week or early next week.

Control Pad – Control X-Plane From Your iPad

Control Pad is a remote instructor’s station app for iPad and iPhone. You can set up and modify your flight without exiting the cockpit; it’s great for training.

Control Pad is free and works with X-Plane 10.40.

X-Plane 10 Mobile for Android

X-Plane 10 Mobile is now available for Android in the Google Play Store. This is the same modern X-Plane 10 Mobile that we shipped for iPhone/iPad last year.  The app is free to fly, with in-app purchase of additional aircraft. Like X-Plane 10 Mobile for iOS, every plane features a custom working 3-d cockpit. More details here.

The Android release features new liveries available for free that are not yet available on iOS – those liveries are coming to iPhone shortly; the plan is to have the same features on iOS and Android, just like we have the same features in X-Plane 10 Global on Mac, Windows and Linux.

(The religious wars over smart phone operating systems are even more crazy than Mac vs Windows. It will be interesting to compare sales of the two mobile operating systems – this is the first time we’ve truly had the same product on both operating systems for an Apples to Apples comparison.)

X Plane 10

The normal X-Plane beta process goes something like this for a “major” beta.

  • Early betas – putting in a fair amount of new code and large-scale restructuring to try to address feature requests and problems.
  • Middle of beta – fixing bugs, often the high risk and tricky ones.
  • End of beta – try to touch as little as possible. Unobtrusive bugs, small changes, nothing crazy.

The idea is to cut down the level of code bashing over time so that by the end of beta we’re not adding a new bug for every bug we fix.

X-Plane 10.40 beta 6 is a little bit atypical in that it is also the first release to have digital download. Since beta 4, we cut down how much code we were changing to try to get digital download released, since the servers and installer became ready to ship.

The result is that beta 7 contains the rest of that “large scale restructuring” and other code change that you’d expect from an early beta – it’s a significantly bigger jump in code than you’d normally expect from a beta that’s this many weeks old.

I am hoping that beta 7 represents the last of this kind of “change a ton” code and that we’ll get into stability mode shortly. But in the meantime:

  • If you make a third party add-on, you should definitely plan to test one of beta 7 or 8 for compatibility in the next week. (Since beta 7 has a bug where the FMS is broken with certain planes, beta 8 might be a better candidate.)
  • There are definitely still bugs we have reports for that are not fixed for beta 7. Check the release notes; if your fix isn’t listed, there’s no need to re-report, it means we just haven’t gotten to it.
  • If you put in a feature request and we said “yeah, we’ll get that into 10.40″, we haven’t forgotten – I have a big backlog of datarefs to add, for example.

I think we still have several more weeks of beta; inserting the release of digital download has stretched the process out. How long beta lasts will be a question of how quickly we can stabilize.

New Commands

X-Plane 10.40 beta 7 adds a big pile of new commands. I will try to produce a comprehensive list later; one of our goals for our own fleet was to have a command to change any control that is all of:

  • An in-cockpit control.
  • Has more than two positions.
  • Has discrete movement (e.g. up a notch, down a notch).

So besides commands added by the request of users, a number of commands were added to add “coverage” to the cockpit.

X Plane 10

X-Plane 10.35 is a minor feature release with lots of new and improved airports and small improvements addressing customer feedback from version 10.32.

Lots of new and updated global airports

  • Total airports with 3-D scenery in the 10.35 release: 1154
  • New airports with 3-D scenery since the 10.30 release: 562
    • You can see the complete list of 3-D airports in the X-Plane 10.35 release, plus the new airports with 3-D scenery, over on the Gateway site.

Fixes for OSX Yosemite

  • Aliases in the Custom Scenery Folder work again (were broken under Yosemite).
  • App won’t crash if you set 10-bit color.  (10-bit color is not recommended and isn’t even available without non-Apple utilities, but if this was crashing, well, now it doesn’t.)
  • Removed all OS X-specific code ‘deprecated’ under Yosemite other than QuickTime for 32-bit X-plane.

Misc Fixes and Improvements

  • Map settings of GPS are now saved in prefs per plane
  • Click scroll acceleration on new GPS instruments works from 3d bezels and commands now
  • Moving map on new GPS instruments observes “only airports on map”, “only paved runways on map” and “min runway length to show on map” settings from Plane Maker now and will display seaplane ports and helipads accordingly
  • Successful loading of small airfields into the GPS database doesn’t clutter up log file anymore. Only problematic sceneries are logged.
  • Fixed popup GPS on default C172 not being tied to the correct bus for electrical power
  • Fixed Avidyne glass panel to show waypoint distances with one decimal place
  • Better logging of taxi sign errors: Any error in taxiway or runway signs will now list the offending scenery pack in the log file, for easier fixing.
  • X-Plane networking now supports IPv6
  • All flight control axes center properly when the CENTER button is hit, which they did not do before.
  • The nosewheel tiller and view-control joystick axis now center properly when the CENTER button is hit.
  • Fixed not all joystick assignment and calibration preferences being saved correctly
  • Removed dysfunctional axes from joystick screen
  • Added commands
    • sim/instruments/EFIS_page_up EFIS page UP

  • Projector setup window labelled more clearly, and the gradient alpha is limited 0 to 1
  • Data-see as chosen from the Data Output menu improved: nicer zoom and colors  to increase useability
  • Dataref-out: datarefs for serial i-o now accept array indices
  • New FDR file format! Version 1 still works, of course, with no mods. Version 2 records more engine data

    • autopilot/autopilot select/ott_sel_VVI
    • autopilot/autopilot select/ott_sel_VVI_HM

    Now these vvi selectors change

    • autopilot VVI command when autopilot in vvi mode
    • autopilot PITCH command when autopilot in pitch mode,
    • and do NOTHING (at all) in all other autopilot modes
  • Removed some unused autopilot variables
